5 August 2018
23 Zul Kaedah 1439
National Day came early for Madrasah As-Soabereen (Bishan). The madrasah held its third National Day celebrations on 5th of August 2018 at Masjid An-Nahdhah, to commemorate the nation’s 53rd year of independence. The full day event comprised of National Day celebrations during the first half of the day and the National Day Observance ceremony during the second. The National Day Observance ceremony supported by Thomson CC MAEC and organised by IMSSA Central Division, was kindly graced by Mr Leong Chong Meng, BBS, PBMChairman, Bishan North CCC; Mr Frankie Ang Kok Hui Chairman, Bishan North CCMC and Ustaz Ali Atan, Chairman of Masjid An-Nahdhah.
The National Day Celebrations was themed as, “Reminisce The Kampong Days”. Traditional kampong games and food from the olden days showcased through booth set-ups. Games include Congkak, Hopscotch, Five Stones, Snake and Ladders, Chapteh, Zero Point and Pick Up sticks. With the aid of instructions and some past familiarity , visitors at the various booths were able to play the games fairly well. It was nostalgic for many as they visited the food booths to claim their sweet treats such as Kachang Puteh, Ice Cream, Ice Pop and Chendol. The entire place was vibrant and lively with the activities that enabled all to re-visit the Kampong days. Back then, every individual in the Kampong will know everyone else within the same vicinity. Today, with decreased social interactions due to technological advancements, activities similar to the National Day Celebrations organised by IMSSA Central Division, intends to encourage social cohesion.
We, the citizens of Singapore,
pledge ourselves as one united people,
regardless of race, language or religion,
to build a democratic society
(An extract of the Singapore National Pledge)
Regardless of race, language or religion, the participants came together to celebrate National Day as one united people. The National Day Observance Ceremony held at the entrance of Masjid An-Nahdhah during the second half of the day commenced with the National flag march-in observed by IMSSA boys from NPCC and NCC (Land) cadet corps.
Subsequently, as the flag was gradually raised high while the National Anthem was played, everyone who gathered felt the sense of belonging to Singapore and the sheer happiness on the independence we have gained. And, as every participant uttered the words of the pledge, the need for people of Singapore to stand together, hand-in-hand, to continue working towards Singapore’s growth was slowly internalised.
The National Day Observance Ceremony ended with the cutting of cake for Singapore’s 53rd Birthday by Mr Leong Chong Meng, Mr Frankie Ang Kok Hui, Ustaz Ali Atan and the Nursery children of Madrasah As-Soabereen (Bishan). The delicious cake was later distributed to all during the sing-along session, which demonstrated the essence of a birthday celebration.
Patriotism was in the air as the national day songs were sang by different voices in harmony, whilst waving their flags cheerfully. From Preschoolers to Adult class, everyone was singing all the National Day songs with the true Singaporean spirit. Similar observation ceremonies over the years serve as a reminder to all that this is home, truly.
So let us stand together as – One people, One nation, One Singapore.
Happy 53rd Birthday Singapore!
