Health Talk: Anxiety and Depression

13 August 2017
20 Dhul-Kai’dah 1438

Healthcare is very important in every individual’s life. Health is an Amanah (responsibility) for each of us. However, how much do we know about it?

Do you know that health is divided to two different factors which is the physical and mental health?

The physical and mental health play key roles in an individual life and they do affect each other. As IMSSA Healthcare has organised many programmes on various aspects of health; such as the different chronic diseases, screenings and many more, it was time for a talk on mental health issues.

Suicide rate has been on the rise during the past few years. We realised that females generally lack the ability to well handle mental issues. Indeed, our audience compromised of women, mainly.

The talk was conducted on the 13th August 2017 from 2.00pm to 6.30pm at Multi-Purpose Hall, Masjid An-Nahdhah. This event was targeted for all adults. The talk was open to ladies from the public together with ladies from both Yishun and Bishan parents’ classes. Approximately about 120 ladies joined in the talk.

To understand our target audience better and to well address them, IMSSA Healthcare invited Dr Radiah Salim and Counsellor Aneez Fathima from ClubHEAL to give us an awareness talk on Dealing with Anxiety and Depression.

Programme Schedule

The talk that commenced by defining the meaning of Anxiety and Depression, eventually provided a complete understanding on the topic by covering:
→  Symptoms
→  Treatments available
→  Contacts and methods to seek help from
→  Islamic teachings on dealing with anxiety and depression

Maintain the closeness of Jamat.
During Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w)’s time, even though the Muslims endured great persecution, including physical beatings, they would sometimes meet on the side of a mountain or valley and tried to pray together.
This is a great morale booster!

At the end of the talk, the attendees gave very good feedback and comments regarding the talk. They found the topic very important and relate-able. They learnt that seeking help is recommended to best handle mental depression. The ladies shared that after discovering how they can seek assistance and from whom, the session has enabled them to come out of their shell. Subconsciously realising that they are not alone in this, has definitely comforted them.

The Health talk conducted in English, which was translated in Tamil language by Mdm Aneez Fathima was immensely welcomed by the mass. The translation in Tamil language presented the Tamil speaking attendees with the opportunity to ask questions and clarify queries that they had.

We truly hope that the knowledge gained through the talk will be well remembered for timely application, in each attendees life, in the future.

Ibn Abbas reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “There are two blessings which many people waste: HEALTH and FREE TIME.”
