Mashallah! On the 9th of May 2023, many were gathered at Wisma Geylang Serai for the “Breaking Fast In Harmony” event during the blessed month of Ramadan. This was jointly organised by People’s Association, CCC and Indian Muslim Social Service Association, and supported by Wisma Geylang Serai, MESRA, Southeast CDC, Marine Parade GRC, Community Emergency and Engagement Committee, and F&N.

This event was a platform to bring together people of various backgrounds to experience break of fast, and give back to the community. Alhamdulillah, by God’s grace, we were able to serve more than 3000 pax this year!

On the eve of Iftar, event preparations began with the help of our internal volunteers. The work had started from 12pm onwards at Kampong Ubi Community Centre. Despite the tiredness, our volunteers pushed through to finish all the preparations. With lots of encouragement for one another and the love to do what we do, all the key work was settled by 6pm. Some of the things that were prepped were cutting of vegetables, mixing spices, setting up the kitchen and more!

The main tasks such as cooking, packing, distribution took place on 9th May. The cooking team came in the early morning, as early as 4am, to start cooking for over 3000 pax at Kampong Ubi CC . The menu for all included Pulau Rice with black pepper chicken, Swiss roll, kueh, orange and dates. For the younger ones, kids meal was specially prepared. In the kids meal, it included burger, wedges, Swiss roll, kueh, oranges and dates. Also, this year, we also had sponsors from Ribena and 100 Plus. Alhamdulillah, all the food served received very good feedback.

After the rigorous work, food was transported from Kampong Ubi CC to Wisma Geylang Serai. We had the opportunity to work with external volunteers from various schools to help with the packing of food. We had several helping hands from Republic Polytechnic students, SMU students as well as Catholic High Secondary School students. Overall, we received close to 30 volunteers. They assisted in packing the bento boxes, and the porridges. After the packing, they had also helped to layout and distribute the food at the different locations within Wisma Geylang Serai (Persada Budaya). Some even stayed on until Iftar to experience break of fast together with their friends! Many found this experience a meaningful and a fun one to do with their friends.

One volunteer mentioned, “I had lots of fun coming here to help out with everyone. I have finally learnt the purpose of fasting and I feel motivated to try fasting with my Muslim friends in the future!”

“And whoever commits a good deed – We will increase for him good therein”

Al-Quran 42: 23

May this event build closeness amongst all in the community. And may everyone be blessed with goodness for their contribution to the event’s success.
